Mr. Godfrey Gichuhi started rabbit keeping in 1991 with help of Kenya Institute of Organic Farming (KIOF), where he was trained during a workshop. Since that time he is keeping three types of rabbits: the “Flamish Giant”, the “New Zealand White” and the “California White”. He is supplying the rabbits to the local community for rearing, apart from that he is also presenting rabbits to the Agricultural Society of Kenya (ASK) Central Province. During several agricultural shows he has been rearing the best awards for more then ten years now.
In the year 2004 on a request from the Ministry of livestock he formed a group of rabbit keepers, so the Mathira Rabbit Keeping and Horticultural/Fruits self-help-group came to life. The group is registered with the Ministry of Gender, Sports, Culture and Social Services under registration no. NYI/REG/CD/A12181 on 22/12/2004.
The group has about eighty active members who have many rabbits of different stages. The rabbits cost Ksh 350 at the age of 1-2 months. The price for older ones varies depending on their live weight or size. The raw rabbits can have a live weight of 5 – 6 kg. The group is now looking for national and international markets.
